The Salvation Army began offering assistance to disaster survivors after a major hurricane hit Galveston, TX in September 1900, destroying the coastal city and killing thousands of people.
Since then, The Salvation Army has responded to numerous natural disasters, transportation accidents, civil unrest situations and terrorist attacks.
By providing beverages, meals, and emotional and spiritual care to first responders and survivors, The Salvation Army strives to bring hope and healing to people who find themselves in the midst of extremely difficult situations.
The Salvation Army operates a 24 hour a day emergency mobile canteen. This mobile kitchen is used by our volunteer disaster team to provide food and support for those in need during an emergency.
The volunteer disaster team responds to fires, floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters. It mobilizes instantly after a call from the fire department or emergency command center. Besides providing food and beverages to those involved in the tragedy, the disaster team also provides moral and spiritual support and encouragement to the people at the scene. The canteen can be called out to local disasters, regional disasters or national disasters.
Additionally, the disaster team supports the firefighters, police and other first responders who are working at the disaster. While these individuals are devotedly serving and protecting our community, The Salvation Army disaster team is supporting their needs for food, beverages and snacks to keep them going. The mobile canteen also goes out to community events such as civic celebrations, organized walks, parades, festivals and other community events.
