The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) was developed in 1972 by the WI Legislature as an independent authority, not a state agency, to make affordable housing for low and moderate income residents.
WHEDA works closely with lenders, developers, local government, nonprofits, community groups and others to implement its low-cost financing programs. They provide low-cost, fixed interest rate mortgages to low- and moderate-income individuals and families to purchase their first home. They also work with developers to finance affordable rental housing, and support economic development and agriculture through our small business guarantee programs.
Property Tax Deferral Loan program offers loans to assist lower income owner occupants over age 65 with property taxes so residents with sufficient home equity and limited disposable income can pay all their taxes on time. Reimbursement is not required until the home is sold. Gross income may not exceed $20,000 must be current with previous property tax. Outstanding mortgage or loan cannot be more than 33% of the appraised value of the home.
