Description:
NDEP resources help educate people about how to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and, for those with diabetes, manage their diabetes and prevent complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) started developing NDEP resources in 1997. Since then, hundreds of national, regional, and local organizations have helped develop and disseminate the resources to deliver quality diabetes education resources throughout the United States.
NDEP resources are based on science. National clinical trials have shown that:
People with prediabetes, or at high risk for type 2 diabetes, can prevent or delay diabetes by losing a moderate amount of weight and engaging in regular physical activity.
People with diabetes can prevent diabetes complications such as blindness, kidney problems, and amputations by managing their blood sugar (glucose), blood pressure, and cholesterol.
NDEP audience-tested diabetes education resources are tailored to a wide range of groups. Organizations have helped NDEP develop, test, collect, and evaluate toolkits and guides, web content, booklets, tip sheets, videos, and more for:
People at risk for type 2 diabetes
People with diabetes and their families
Community and faith-based organizations and individuals
Health care providers
Businesses and work sites
NDEP resources are culturally and linguistically appropriate. National and community-based organizations have gathered and developed tailored diabetes education resources for:
African Americans and people of African Ancestry
American Indians and Alaska Natives
Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders
Hispanics and Latinos
